Emerald, history and lore

The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC into the 1700s. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emerald, and used it in her royal adornments. But now some historians believe that the emerald collection of Cleopatra consist of peridot and not emerald.

The Spanish, treasured gold and silver far more than gems and traded emeralds for precious metals. Thanks to their trade  the eyes of European and Asian royalty opened to emerald’s majesty.

The most beautiful emeralds are found in Muzo Colombia. For centuries the Inca civilization used emeralds for their jewelry and religious ceremonies.
