Chalcedony, history and lore

Blue chalcedony Namibia

Already a long, very long time ago our ancestors knew the value of chalcedony. Not only because of the eye catching beauty of chalcedony but the discovered a special application: engraving. Chalcedony is the perfect gemstone for engraving and cutting amulets or figurines.

In the bronze age in the Palace of Knossos, chalcedony was used to make official stamps. There are even official seals of chalcedony discovered from before 1800 BC.

Years later, rings with beautiful intaglios in chalcedony were found along the trade routes in Central Asia.

Agate and jasper are varieties of chalcedony.
